achievement awards - academic awards earned by students who excel.

activities - outings planned by Staff, mostly for Saturdays and Sundays. Participation in these activities is earned by students through room and chore points.

assistant roomhead - a responsible person who helps the roomhead keep the room tidy and safe.

Bunny Boppers/Honey Bunnies - names of our 4-H groups.

bunny barn - the area on campus where our bunnies live.

charm necklace - a necklace that holds charms that we earn for achievements and participation in events.

chore checker - a person who has earned the privilege to check others' chores to make sure they were done properly.

clean-up - a group of 3 or 4 students whose chore it is to clean up after each meal for a week.

community - a meeting in which all staff and students come together to talk about N.L.A. announcements as well as issues that need to be discussed.

consequences - 30 minutes of afternoon work to learn from your mistakes. Consequences are given by staff to students when students break rules or to help a student stay on track with her growth.

Cook - students who prepare our meals as a chore.

cooperative learning - learning that occurs through group participation and cooperation.

correction area - tables in the classroom where we sit to correct our math and take tests.

counselors - staff who help us with our problems, correspond with our families, and lead groups.

fair - the Deschutes County Fair in Redmond where we take our bunnies and show them.

five-minute breaks - breaks taken during school.

five-minute warnings - a warning given before every meal and activity so that we know that five minutes remain until we meet.

4-H - a club which has many projects, such as showing and learning about bunnies. Christy Christiansen is our club leader.

GIG - stands for "get-in-gear", the first activity of our school day.

glass box - a wire box located in the living room where we put lost and found articles.

Good Morning Girls - inspirational quote read during breakfast.

Goody's - one of the stores we go to on the weekends.

grab bag - bag filled with privileges and rewards give to students who qualify through earning room check points.

Green Ridge - the name of the first N.L.A. campus.

grounding - a loss of off-campus activities due to poor behavior.

group - a group counseling time that occurs twice a week where we talk about ourselves and solve conflicts with others.

headmistress - the head of our school.

heavy cleaning - Saturday cleaning that involves deep cleaning beyond regular chores.

home visit - a girl may go home for a week after being here a year.

honor roll - earning a 3.00 G.P.A. or better. A student on honor roll receives a certificate and recognition.

house laundry - laundry that we use during the day that belongs to the house.

houseparent - staff who spend the evening and stay with us overnight to make sure we are safe.

jobs - extra chores given to responsible girls who want to earn more money.

last light - the end-of-the-day time when we gather to be read to by a houseparent.

laundry head - the appointed student for each day to help her laundry mates complete their laundry.

lights out - the time for bedroom lights to be turned off for the night.

meds - short for medications.

multi-purpose room - a new building beside the house where we have activities such as Friday movies. It is also a place of privilege that can be earned by star steppers who may spend thirty minutes a day there.

on-campus visit - a parent visit restricted to the N.L.A. campus.

Parent's Weekend - weekend visits of parents to the N.L.A. campus, occurring approximately every two months.

personals - our personal items that we buy at the store.

personals cabinet - cabinet where we keep our personals.

petitions - a request for advancement to the next step written by a student and given to a counselor. It includes a self-assessment to show readiness for new challenges.

privileges - special rights given to students who demonstrate responsible behavior. (examples: using the stereo, study hall in room, cosmetics.)

request forms - the forms students use to request personal items to be purchased.

restaurant pick - the restaurant pick of the month, chosen by a Houseparent.

Rock Mesa - the name of the second N.L.A. campus.

room checks - evaluation by staff of rooms three times a day to make sure they are neat.

room head - a responsible person who keeps the room safe and makes sure rules are not broken.

Safeway - one of the stores we go to on weekends.

scholar - earning 3.5 G.P.A. or above. The scholar receives a certificate and a charm.

Scrapadoodles - a scrap booking supply store that we go to on weekends.

self-assess - when one evaluates herself.

shut down - behavior that involves a closing up and an unwillingness to listen to feedback from staff or students.

staff shopping - continuing to ask a question of one staff to the next until getting the desired answer.

staying present - staying in the moment rather than projecting into the future.

Steps - levels of therapeutic work, including Sun, Moon and Star.

store run - trip to the store for girls who earn their points. We rotate between three stores.

student of the week - an honor given to one student who has role modeled good choices.

white phone - a privilege that can be earned which allows a girl to talk on the white phone outside the office.
